Matt Nystrom is a Swell Guy

Posted by Marty on May 10th, 2008

Tonight I performed at an event that I would rather forget.

The good that came of it is that I met Matt Nystrom, a transplant to Columbus from Seattle. Drop by say hey to him and check out his band, Threefold. Despite my deep dislike of the Christian music scene, Matt is one of those genuinely nice guys who also happens to work in that circle.

Remember Her?

Posted by Marty on March 20th, 2008

Give me your thoughts on this song by Sinead O’Connor.

I wanna make
Something beautiful
For you and from you
To show you
To show you
I adore you
Oh you

And your journey
Toward me
Which I see
And I see
All you push through
Mad for you
And because of you

I couldn’t thank you in ten thousand years
If I cried ten thousand rivers of tears
Ah but you know the soul
And you know what makes it gold
You who give life through blood
Blood, blood, blood…

Oh I wanna make something
So lovely for you
‘Cause I promised that’s what i’d do for you
With the bible I stole
I know you forgave my soul
Because such was my need
On a chronic christmas eve
And I think we’re agreed that it
Should have been free
And you sang to me

They dress the wounds of my poor people
As though they’re nothing
Saying “peace”
When there’s no peace

They dress the wounds of my poor people
As though they’re nothing
Saying “peace”
When there’s no peace

Days without number
Days without number

Now can a bride forget her jewels
Or a maid her ornaments
Yet my people forgotten me

Days without number
Days without number

And in their want
Oh in there want
And in their want
Who’ll dress their wounds
Who’ll dress their wounds

Words

Posted by Marty on January 4th, 2008

I’m a big fan of words. Not just the words I say and sing but the words of others.

One of my favorite songwriters was Warren Zevon. Here are the lyrics to his song “My Ride’s Here”.

WARREN ZEVON - My Ride’s Here

(Warren Zevon and Paul Muldoon)

I was staying at the Marriott
With Jesus and John Wayne
I was waiting for a chariot
They were waiting for a train
The sky was full of carrion
“I’ll take the mazuma”
Said Jesus to Marion
“That’s the 3:10 to Yuma
My ride’s here…”

The Houston sky was changeless
We galloped through bluebonnets
I was wrestling with an angel
You were working on a sonnet
You said, “I believe the seraphim
Will gather up my pinto
And carry us away, Jim
Across the San Jacinto
My ride’s here…”

Shelley and Keats were out in the street
And even Lord Byron was leaving for Greece
While back at the Hilton, last but not least
Milton was holding his sides
Saying, “You bravos had better be
ready to fight
Or we’ll never get out of East Texas tonight
The trail is long and the river is wide
And my ride’s here”

I was staying at the Westin
I was playing to a draw
When in walked Charlton Heston
With the Tablets of the Law
He said, “It’s still the Greatest Story”
I said, “Man, I’d like to stay
But I’m bound for glory
I’m on my way
My ride’s here…”

So, what do you get out of it, if anything?
