Friday Night Lights

Posted by Marty on January 6th, 2008

I don’t watch a lot of TV, not because I am morally opposed to it but simply because I don’t have time for it. That was until a bout with insomnia and a netflix membership led me to watch the first 8 episodes of Friday Night Lights.

I like the show though I am pretty tired of always hearing how the coaches job is on the line and I don’t really think that a High School coach could call the house of every team member on his squad at 10:00 PM and have every one of them show up to a “practice” where they did wind sprints in the rain up and down a hill….then he let a guy walk home from that practice.

So I was just bumping through some news stories and noticed that Matt Czuchry is slated to join the cast of the show this month and he’ll play a Christian radio talk-show host for at least four episodes. Could be longer depending on the writers strike.

Words

I’m a big fan of words. Not just the words I say and sing but the words of others.

One of my favorite songwriters was Warren Zevon. Here are the lyrics to his song “My Ride’s Here”.

WARREN ZEVON - My Ride’s Here

(Warren Zevon and Paul Muldoon)

I was staying at the Marriott
With Jesus and John Wayne
I was waiting for a chariot
They were waiting for a train
The sky was full of carrion
“I’ll take the mazuma”
Said Jesus to Marion
“That’s the 3:10 to Yuma
My ride’s here…”

The Houston sky was changeless
We galloped through bluebonnets
I was wrestling with an angel
You were working on a sonnet
You said, “I believe the seraphim
Will gather up my pinto
And carry us away, Jim
Across the San Jacinto
My ride’s here…”

Shelley and Keats were out in the street
And even Lord Byron was leaving for Greece
While back at the Hilton, last but not least
Milton was holding his sides
Saying, “You bravos had better be
ready to fight
Or we’ll never get out of East Texas tonight
The trail is long and the river is wide
And my ride’s here”

I was staying at the Westin
I was playing to a draw
When in walked Charlton Heston
With the Tablets of the Law
He said, “It’s still the Greatest Story”
I said, “Man, I’d like to stay
But I’m bound for glory
I’m on my way
My ride’s here…”

So, what do you get out of it, if anything?

Oooops!

Its been sad for a long time but the more I see her in the news I am afraid that the entire Britney Spears meltdown in life has a very high risk of being profoundly TRAGIC.

Last night Spears had to be taken to to the hospital for a mental evaluation after she spent 3 hours with her ex-husband, Kevin Federline and the police turning her kids over.

Britney Spears has spent a lot of time being the brunt too a lot of jokes. For a long time they haven’t been funny but now how can anyone see this woman as anything less than broken?

So, I’m writing this blog to encourage you to pray for a few things.

1) Pray for pop princess Britney Spears
2) Pray for her children
3) Pray for the medical folks around her
4) Pray for her mom and the others who benefit from the business that is killing Britney
5) Pray that she will have calm
6) Last but not least pray for her to experience the unconditional grace and love of Christ

OK, there it is.

Here is a link to the story about Britney last night.

From the world offices of “Duh, you really think so” experts are now saying that “Happiness may be good for your health”…gee that is so revolutionary. Isn’t this just common sense?

Do we really need studies that tell us it is healthy to be happy?

Next study; oxygen to the brain helps you stay conscious.

I love food!

Posted by Marty on January 3rd, 2008

Ok, I love food as much and maybe a little more than the next guy and I have been in my share of food fights, but nobody got hurt except when Joe A. got jello in his eye which he said “stung like a son of a gun”..

I just read a news article out of Oklahoma City, OK I read where a guy was stabbed in the neck by another guy DURING A FOOD FIGHT with a PORK CHOP BONE!

A PORK CHOP BONE, PEOPLE!!!

When did a food fight become hand to hand combat? Why the heck is a guy winging around a pork chop bone anyway? According to the rules of “Food Fight Club”, once the meat is off the bone it is no longer a food.

Dial it back a little bit and return the civility to food fighting that it enjoyed for centuries before this ill-fated pork chop bone incident in Oklahoma City!

Here’s a link to this stupid story.
